Mafia clan tried to buy Lazio football club

Italian police arrested seven suspects linked to an alleged attempt by a Neapolitan Camorra mafia gang -The Casalesi- to purchase Lazio, a top Italian soccer club.

The gang tried to acquire the club through money earned from drug dealing and other illicit activities.

The Casalesi, allegedly enlisted the support of members of Lazio's hardcore group of hooligans, the Irriducibili, to threaten Lazio's current chairman into selling his stake in the club.

Among those still being sought was former New York Cosmos striker Giorgio Chinaglia, who moved to the States two years ago when authorities first ordered his arrest on other criminal charges.
